Common questions
How do I find the right HS code for my product?
Start from what the item is made of and what it is used for, not from your product title. Narrow to a six digit heading, then open the destination tariff page and read the heading text and the notes above it. If the wording matches your goods, the code fits. If two headings could apply, the more specific description wins.
Do I need a different HS code for each country?
The first six digits are the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System. Longer national codes, such as ten digits in the United States or eight for export from the European Union, are added at entry by the importer of record or the customs broker.
What happens if I use the wrong HS code?
Duty can be calculated at the wrong rate, parcels can be held while customs asks for a correction, and repeated errors can lead to penalties for the importer of record. Correcting the code in your catalog is cheaper than correcting it at every entry.
Where does the HS code go in Shopify?
On the variant, in the shipping section, in the harmonized system code field, next to country of origin. Set it per variant, since a change of material or size can move an item to a different heading.
