Why your storefront contradicts itself

A storefront rarely fails all at once. It drifts. A shipping threshold changes on one page but not another, a product joins a collection it contradicts, a sale banner outlives its date. Each one is small, and together they read as a store that does not have its act together. Here is where the contradictions come from and how to catch them.

All guides

The contradictions that cost the most

  • Conflicting shipping promises: the banner says free shipping over one amount, the footer says another, checkout says a third. Shoppers who add to the first number and hit a higher one at checkout abandon.
  • A product that contradicts its collection: a deck marked for experienced readers sitting in a Beginner collection, or a vegan item listed with leather in its materials. The page argues with itself.
  • Expired promotions still live: a sale-ends date that has passed or a code that no longer works. It reads as neglect.

Where the drift comes from

  • Copy lives in many places, from theme sections to product pages to policy pages to metafields, and gets updated in one but not the others.
  • Collections are often rule-based, so a product can match a collection its own description contradicts.
  • Promotions are added quickly and removed slowly.
  • Supplier or bulk imports overwrite fields you had set by hand.

How to catch it before shoppers do

  • Pick a single source of truth for each promise, one shipping threshold and one returns window, and make every page match it.
  • Re-read each collection as a shopper: does every product belong, and does its description agree?
  • Put an expiry reminder on every promotion the moment you launch it.
  • Re-check after any bulk import or supplier sync, since those are where hand-set copy quietly gets overwritten.

Common questions

Why does my Shopify store show different shipping information on different pages?

Because shipping copy lives in several places, from banners to the footer to policy pages to checkout settings, and usually gets updated in one without the others. Pick one threshold and make every page match it.

How do expired promotions stay live on a store?

Promotions are added quickly and removed slowly, so a sale-ends date or a dead code sits on the page until someone notices. Setting an expiry reminder at launch avoids it.

What causes a product to contradict its own collection?

Collections are often rule-based, so a product can match the rule while its description says the opposite, like a product for experienced users landing in a beginner collection. Re-reading each collection as a shopper catches it.
